A new highway bridge was inaugurated in Penza. The bridge over the Sura River is actually a system of transportation facilities including left-bank and right-bank viaducts, a bridge over the river, a railway overpass, and an interchange. The total length of the bridge is of 1,603 meters.
The bridge was built under the Russian Federation Chemical Weapon Destruction Program as part of the social commitment to the region. The construction project was launched in 2006, simultaneously with construction of a chemical weapon destruction plant, but the operations were suspended in 2009 because of the funding problems. The construction operations resumed only this year. The final cost of the project is about 7.5 billion rubles.
