The city executives, leading architectural, design and restoration experts as well as members of the business community and public representatives discussed the outlook for the conversion of the regional center insular areas. The roundtable began with a presentation of the “Concept of the Urban Development of Russky Island” by Anatoly Melnik, member of the Union of Architects of Russia.

“At present, a concept of city development ordered by the Vladivostok Administration is under preparation. Today, after the Russky Bridge has been built, we can discuss potentials of the entire island, and it is telling that the discussion is taking place right here, on Russky Island”,

– Anatoly Melnik emphasized.

“I would like to underscore that the public/ business and housing developments are envisaged mainly on the Saperny Peninsula. The plans here include building a Vlad-Expo Business Center and a recreational park.”

According to the experts, the development of Russky Island has to be conducted while preserving its uniqueness.

The roundtable participants discussed the opportunities for the recreational use of the island, the outlook for housing development and for building the transportation infrastructure. The discussion addressed the problems of restoration of the Vladivostok Fortress, reviewed the experience of the development of the International Rowing Center in the Novik Bay, and also dealt with implementation of other Russky Island improvement projects.

“The conversation was interesting, and I think it has to be ongoing. We need to work out an understanding of how the island can be developed. According to the experts, the concept of Russky Island development must take into account the creation of a future anticipatory development area here.”

– Igor Pushkarev, Mayor of Vladivostok, said at the closing of the roundtable.
